My Hygge Playlist

So: a few years ago, my mom purchased a Hygge book out of curiosity. Being the 'teenager' that I was, I refused to touch it and give my mom the satisfaction of me actually being interested in a book she picked out. But a few months ago, I finally overcame my teenager-ish ways and reluctantly skimmed through it.

For those of you who are thinking, 'What in the world is hygge and how on earth do you pronounce it,' hygge (pronounced hoo-guh) is the Danish art and 'lifestyle' of happiness, well-being, and contentment. It's a word for that 'cozy' mood you get when the house is clean, you're wrapped in a blanket on the couch with a good book, quietly sipping your tea.

That feeling.

The book wasn't really a guide on how to be happy, like I thought it was going to be; rather, it was how to make your home (and any place, really) a space of comfort and happiness, and how to incorporate that 'cozy' feeling into your everyday life. And I was obsessed.

Now, I'm definitely no expert in hygge. In fact, I know only very little of hygge. But I love the concept and really want to explore it further!

I do know hygge enough to have created my own 'hygge' playlist. I've technically always had a 'hygge' playlist, but I just didn't call it that. It was my 'relaxation' playlist. (Okay, not literally a playlist, but just a bunch of go-to songs.) Either way, today I'm sharing it with you!

I listen to this playlist mainly in the mornings, during my first cup of coffee before anyone else is up, and in the evenings, after I've taken a hot shower and am winding down.

When I look up 'hygge playlists', every playlist is different. There isn't really a 'hyggelig' genre of music, because what makes me feel happy and cozy may be different from what makes you feel happy!

That being said, there are quite a variety of songs in this playlist. I sort of tried to group it by genre, but I'll leave it up to you to really figure out which songs are good for certain things and which are good for others. ;) This really just progresses through my moods throughout the day.

So this is simply my Hygge playlist, but I encourage you to create your own! Okay, I'm done using the words hygge and playlist now.

So put on some cozy slippers, light a candle, grab a book, and enjoy the music.

Skating in Central Park - Bill Evans & Jim Hall

Ahhh... I can hear the peace. If it's wasn't possible to 'hear peace' before, it is now.

Jazz and White - Cafe Music BGM Channel

Cafe Music BGM Channel is one of my go-to's for relaxing/studying/jazz in general. They have a ton of live feeds on Youtube as well as hours of calming, relaxing jazz. Check them out!

String of Pearls (feat. Dr. Saxlove) - New York Lounge Quartett

This is a fantastic wake-up! Vintage, fun, snazzy, yet it can still eeeease you into the day.

What Lana Says - Proleter

I found Proleter recently and am in love with his music! This song is calming, fun, and vintage all at the same time! (Can you tell I love vintage?) This song just makes me want to twirl in my socks in the kitchen. Kitchen dance party, anyone??

Family Theme Waltz - Sondre Lerche

Dan in Real Life is probably my all-time favorite movie. In our house, it's our go-to rainy day movie, mostly because of the soundtrack! Sondre Lerche's music has a very unique, raw, unprocessed sound, making it sound very nostalgic and homey.

Izaura (feat. Joao Gilberto) - Stan Getz

Is it weird that our family loves Brazilian music? It seems normal to me, but whenever I tell my friends I love Brazilian music they tend to look at me weird... But there's something about that music that's just so soothing! We play it often during dinnertime, or when we have guests over.

Dog Years - Maggie Rogers

Maggie Rogers is another favorite in our house. Her music is very unique and aesthetic!

 Alaska - Maggie Rogers

This one's probably my favorite Maggie Rogers song. It's perfect for when you want to relax but at the same time hype yourself up. That made more sense in my head than it does typed out.

Dreams - Joakim Karud

Beach, anyone?! When I listen to this song, I can only think about summer and how I'd love to enjoy an icy cold popsicle and relax by the poolside. Oh, how I dream of warmer weather. 😍

I Ain't Fallin' for That - Fox Morrow

Another aesthetic, vibey tune. This song is the kind of song that's relaxing, but at the same time, you can bob your foot to it. (Is that a thing? Do you know what I'm talking about? Like bobbing your head, but instead, you bob your foot?)

(I bet you just tried to bob your foot.)

Loved Ones (Saudades) - Armando Young

Ahhh, I love this one. It makes me think of simplicity, minimalism, and contentedness. Music to my ears. Literally.

Well, what did you think? Like I said earlier, there's quite a variety of songs, so hopefully you found at least one that you really like. I can't wait to hear what you think!

What do you think?

How did you pronounce hygge the first time you saw it? Do you want more posts on hygge? Do you have a hygge playlist?

  1. Ahh, I ADORE the entire "feeling" or "lifestyle" of hygge!! I was first introduced to it as an interior design decorating style, but over the years I've realized that it's so much more. ;) You described it perfectly in this post, and I really enjoyed checking out all the music you mentioned! Some hygge songs I love are:

    - "Arms Unfolding" and "Human" by Dodie (actually any Dodie song would fit)
    - "Fool" by Cavetown
    - "when the party's over" and "everything i wanted" by Billie Eilish
    - "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane

    Anyways, great post! <333
